Art Afternoon: Painting and Photography in the 19th Century
Monday July 13 2026 2:00PM
Sun City Library
Event Description
Phoenix Art Museum docents present How Painting and Photography Influenced Each Other in the 19th Century. Disruption may sound like a scary word. In the world of art, however, disruption creates progress and sparks new ideas. That’s a good thing! In the mid-19th century, two major artistic disruptions occurred: the invention of photography and painters’ rejection of the Academic style in favor of a more expressive approach called Impressionism. We’ll explore the positive impact of disruption by looking at how painting and photography influenced each other. Registration needed. Adults.

About the presenter
Docent Rick Gayle is a graduate of The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. He has been a commercial photographer for forty years, working with local and national ad agencies and corporations. His involvement in photography started when he was 12; his parents took him to “The Family of Man” exhibition, and he realized the power a single image can have. He began exploring the medium and fell in love with light and storytelling. From that point on he began his immersion into discovery. Many years later, he knew he wanted to make a living in photography. Commercial photography was the best way for him to be able to be creative and have an income. All along, he has consistently shot personal work. Now he is on a new journey of discovering why he picked up a camera in the first place...to connect to his world in his own autobiographical way.
