SUMMARY:Grounds for Thought
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nEnjoy chatting about what you've read? Looking fo
r some encouragement to read more? Join us for an afternoon of coffee\, te
a\, and enthusiastic discussion at our monthly book club for adults. We'd
love to have you come! This month's book is "Sisters in Science" by Olivia
Campbell. \nIn the 1930s\, Germany was a hotbed of scientific thought. B
ut after the Nazis took power\, Jewish and female citizens were forced out
of their academic positions. Hedwig Kohn\, Lise Meitner\, Hertha Sponer\,
and Hildegard Stücklen were eminent in their fields\, but they had no c
hoice but to flee due to their Jewish ancestry or anti-Nazi sentiments. Th
eir harrowing journey out of Germany became a life-and-death situation tha
t required herculean efforts of friends and other prominent scientists. No
matter their destination\, each woman revolutionized the field of physics
when all odds were stacked against them\, galvanizing young women to do t
he same.\n\nRequirements:\nDo you require an accommodation to participate
in this event? Call 602-652-3000\, TTY 771\, or submit your request in per
son at least 14 business days before the event.
